But in April 2018, the killer was finally identfied and apprehended, closing one of the most haunting cold cases of the century. We partnered with Audible to create the key art and launch campaign promoting their original series that detailed the harrowing saga of the GSK. Through a mix of bold typography and 3D simulations, we sought to express the ever-evolving nature of the investiagation, and how a collection of clues from over four decades could come together to tell the story of evil. Holes. A certified icon among true crime fans, Paul Holes was instrumental in the identification and arrest of the Golden State Killer. We were lucky enough to have him walk us through his investigative process and give us a first person look at where the GSK committed his crimes. As an original story created exclusively for the audio streamer, it was up to us to create the entire look and feel of the world and characters. After rewatching some favorite vampire flicks, we dove headfirst into the darkness to create the key art, trailer and numerous social teasers. At the end of it all, the lesson learned: when in doubt, add more blood. So when it came time to showcase some of the most memorable lines from the series, we just HAD to carve them into ice and have them gradually fill with blood runnning down from icy veins. Frozen Totems Rather than putting a face to every name in the story, we wanted to leave more to the audience’s imagination; so we selected totems to represent a selection of characters, frozen inside jagged pieces of ice. Working with illustrator Justin Harder, each of the twenty OWL teams was reimagined in a style that fused comic book traditions (gimme that Kirby Krackle) with a cut and paste DIY spirit. This look then formed the basis of a series of cel animations that saw each team’s players get a little wild, running and jumping through their cities with no regard for their own safety.Role: Art Football Playoffs The College Football Playoffs are where the biggest and brightest young stars come to lay their claim to history. It’s the biggest stage in college sports, right alongside the Final Four. And while college hoops owns “madness,” the spectacle of ringing in the new year with the college football national title game is unmatched. The team at ESPN came to us with the visual jumping off point of an ornate Art Deco inspired pattern. From there, we designed and animated a full game package that could be integrated with the team photo shoots. Maybe it the Devastator’s ability to impale enemies with a spike that explodes from the ground – but we can’t be sure.
